Genuine love does not depend on externals or a relationship with someone else. Love is a force that resides within each and everyone of us. Love is a wondrous quality that can be awakened and cultivated through joyful diligence and a dash of patience.
In his evocative prayer, St. Francis describes the essence of love.
“Lord make me an instrument
Of thy peace, where there is hatred,
Let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that
I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we
Are pardoned, and it is in dying
That we are born to eternal life.
It might seem impossible to become such a profound fountain of love. But, if you gradually fill yourself with one drop of love at a time, you’ll eventually become an ocean of love.
The key is to infuse your thoughts, words, gestures, and actions with love. Start small. Be intentional Begin with one or two loving words or gestures a day. Just smiling at a stranger can light you both up. And, don’t forget to love and encourage yourself too. Just keep going, adding a little more love each day.
You’re true essence is love. This is the real you. And, when you discover this, you’ll find so much relief from all the ordinary preoccupations of mind. You’ll discover so much more joy and freedom.
