This Is Love

The Essence of Love - White Rose

Genuine love does not depend on externals or a relationship with someone else.  Love is a force that resides within each and everyone of us.  Love is a wondrous quality that can be awakened and cultivated through joyful diligence and a dash of patience.

In his evocative prayer, St. Francis describes the essence of love.

“Lord make me an instrument
Of thy peace, where there is hatred,
Let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that
I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we
Are pardoned, and it is in dying
That we are born to eternal life.
-St. Francis

It might seem impossible to become such a profound fountain of love.  But, if you gradually fill yourself with one drop of love at a time, you’ll eventually become an ocean of love.

The key is to infuse your thoughts, words, gestures, and actions with love.  Start small.  Be intentional  Begin with one or two loving words or gestures a day.  Just smiling at a stranger can light you both up.  And, don’t forget to love and encourage yourself too.  Just keep going, adding a little more love each day.

You’re true essence is love.  This is the real you.  And, when you discover this, you’ll find so much relief from all the ordinary preoccupations of mind.  You’ll discover so much more joy and freedom.

  1. Hi Sandra,
    Love is a natural emotion…inherent in all living beings, it enhances if it is nurtured rightly… like the plants die if we don’t care enough, so does love turn hostile if it is not channelised properly. A child’s love is unconditional and unselfish. It is when he comes in touch with pretensions that he learns there is another face of love.

    The lovely prayer says it all…sowing love where it is missing, inculcating faith which heals all the misery and developing a spirit of giving…whatever we can! I wish more people could understand the meaning of love.

    Thank you Sandra for sharing such sublime thoughts.

    • Dear Balroop,

      You have such a beautiful view on love! Yes, if only more people could feel loved and be love. It would be such a different world. I appreciate your dedication to such a sublime possibility!

  2. And this is beautiful Sandra. Especially this “if you gradually fill yourself with one drop of love at a time, you’ll eventually become an ocean of love.”

    Whatever we put our attention on will expand until we see more and more of it everywhere we look. And a love filled life truly is a life worth living.

    Thanks for making my morning just a little more lovely.

    • Thank you, Elle! I’m so glad this spoke to you. I think you are so right: whatever we put our attention to will expand. Everything depends on how we perceive!

      Wishing you a lovely morning everyday.

  3. Hi Sandra,

    Lots of love to you on St. Valentine’s Day! Love is definitely the answer – to everything 🙂

  4. Absolutely beautiful post, Sandra! Thank you for sharing your love!

  5. I love this, thank you. For me, not just smiling at strangers, I also smile at myself when I see my reflection in a mirror. Try it. Big magic!

    In appreciation,
    Sue
