Kid-safe chemicals

The Environmental Working Group “tested the umbilical cord blood of 10 newborn babies and found nearly 300 chemicals, including BPA, fire retardants, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides that were banned more than 30 years ago.”

They say: “Bills to overhaul federal toxic chemicals policies are now moving through Congress. They would require that all chemicals be proven safe for children before they can be sold. Lawmakers in Washington need to know that you want strong reforms for our broken toxics law.”

Oil spill: fresh perspectives

  1. This is sad and scary. As I walked round the supermarket today I was thinking (as I watched a woman choosing one of the 50 ready make salad dressings) about how simultaneously sophisticated and ignorant we’ve become. Time to get back to basics… in the time it took her to choose I could have mixed up a yummy olive oil, apple cidder vinegar, horseradish and honey number:)

Sorry if this seems a bit random, Sandra but your writing and blog reminded me of it!

Thanks for enlightening us and scaring us into action:)

Annabel, It doesn’t seem random in my mind because so much is interconnected. Choosing the “sophisticated” option is interconnected with our current planetary woes. But I sure don’t want to scare anyone! I’m eminently hopeful and I think it’s important to stay positive in light of the global challenges we face. Each era has it’s own challenges and bottled salad dressing in all its ramifications is part of ours. I know you have an optimistic heart too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  2. This is so sad. When will our society wake up and see that there is a reason for an increase in Alzheimer disease, and so many other illnesses. The EPA mandates safe amounts for individual chemicals (an oxymoron if there ever was one). No one knows what the cocktail of chemicals, ingested over a lifetime, causes.

Kathleen, You are so right about the link between chemicals and the rampant illnesses that surround us. I see more and more people waking up and more changes coming soon. I’ve been missing you and plan to pop over to your blog soon to see what’s cooking.
