New Bueno theme

WordPress has introduced another excellent theme called ‘Bueno.’  I’m torn between Inuit Types, my current theme this very moment, and Bueno.  I like them both very much, although there are features of each that I don’t like at all.  I’ve tried Bueno on a test blog, but I can’t get the full feel of how it will look without giving it a whirl.

So here goes.  I will be gradually switching over to Bueno in the next hour but it could take a few days to clean up from the transition—removing duplicate photos and the like.  Also some of the features are not working correctly on Bueno, so it may take a few days before I have the solid white background that I’m hoping for. Please pardon the mess in the transition.  If I decide Bueno is really not for me, then I’ll switch back to Inuit Types.

I would love to hear any feedback you have on the two themes.  What’s your preference?

  1. I too liked this theme but, the writing area is too narrow for me, I don’t like the fonts chosen for the header, as you described it, too ‘chunky’ looking. You can add your own header and background which I did on my test blog.
It looks nice here though. Just wish they would allow us to have that ‘width’ change available on every theme AND allow us to change the blasted default fonts! Grrr!

    • Hi Sandra! Thanks for commenting. I’m with you, I would like a wider writing area, though not as wide as you prefer, and I don’t love those chunky header titles. I wish I could marry the fonts of Inuit Types and wider writing area with the style and flexibility of Bueno. I’m leaning toward Bueno as it feels a little more friendly and warmer than Inuit Types, but really miss the beautiful font and wider writing area. It seems like getting the CSS upgrade is the only way to fine tune the theme perfectly to one’s wishes. I’ll need to think about that. Thanks for coming by.

    • I chose this theme and made many small changes, one of the first was making it liquid. Yes sometimes stuff overlaps if the window is shrunk enough, but at least it expands with a big browser window. I also changed the fonts quite a bit.

      • I LOVE what you did with this theme! I don’t have the CSS upgrade nor the technological expertise to cope with a CSS upgrade so my options are more limited. But I totally love what you did. Wishing you fun and success with your blog.

  2. I think this theme fit you very well. Very clean. I think the writing area is perfekt. I am fond of this serif font because it is good to read…the only thing I do not like that much is the frames around photos or image…..but many like to see them highlighted…..Sorry for my English..it is not my language! I come from Sweden…
    HAVE A GOOD DAY!

    • You have a very beautiful blog! I enjoyed your post of Zen stories. Thanks for your impression of my blog. I am following your advice and discovered how to remove the pastel frames from the photos! It will take a little time, but looks much better. Thanks again for your visit and best wishes for your successes in life.

  3. Setting aside features we have been discussing in the forum that may or may not be working correctly, I like the appearance of this theme very much.

The only thing I strongly dislike is the size and choice of font in the blog title and pages. Making it even worse is the fact that all letters are capitalized – yuck!

It’s unfortunate though that the featured posts are only the last 5 posts because that’s a duplication as the most recent posts are on the front page.

    • Hello Time Thief, thanks for your input, which I always value so much. I too dislike the size and chunky style of font in the blog title, pages, and the like. I wish I could marry the fonts and darker font color of Inuit Types and wider writing space too with the appearance of this theme. I plan to try creating a tag called ‘featured post’ so I can select the posts that I wish to feature and change them as I wish without them all being from one tag category. This hasn’t worked so far, probably because I need to put the excerpt in the excerpt box as suggested on the forum, although my recent posts show up without using the excerpt box. Still learning all the nuances.

I know that unless I’m up to trying the CSS Upgrade, I need to settle for a compromise so for now it’s the chunky titles but friendlier appearance of Bueno!

  4. I forgot to tell you two things.

    1. I love the background you have applied because I find it very restful on my eyes. I don’t experience the twitching optic nerve problem I have with “busy” backgrounds when viewing your choice here. Good choice!

    2. I have gone nuts (well, not really) but I am flummoxed by the Featured Posts widgets. I cannot figure out how it is meant to function. :(

    • TiTi: Thanks for the feedback on the background. I’ve been wondering about it so it helps a LOT to get the feedback. I’m trying to keep it simple but the solid white background seemed too plain. I also learned from Panos how to remove the pastel borders on the photos, which I find not so professional looking.

I am also going crazy with the Featured Posts Widget and just left a message about it on the forum. It will work for some categories as long as they have more than 5 post tags but not for the new category I created and I can’t figure out WHY! I would much rather be able to use the post category than the post tag, but since we don’t have that option, I created a new post tag called Featured Post so I can just select the posts I want featured and tag them that way and it will show the last 5 from that tag presumably. But it doesn’t work. I’ve tried adding the extracts, but it doesn’t make a difference. And, featured posts will appear from the two tags that do work even though they don’t have excerpts as well as when I just show the last five posts without excerpts when I don’t select a tag at all.

Panos says he’s not having a problem with it so perhaps he will shed some light for us. It’s a great feature and I wouldn’t have switched from Inuit Types if the theme didn’t have this feature. So now, if it would only work or if I could only figure it out!!!! Good luck to both of us.

  5. Hello. I came across your blog while I was researching a problem I am having with this template. You’ve done a wonderful job with yours. It’s clean, clear, and friendly. I have a few questions if you don’t mind:
    1. Did you choose not to use the featured images for a particular reason? I can’t seem to get mine to stop duplicating in the post. Did you have the same problem?

    2. How did you put your personal photo and the text at the top of your sidebar? That is classy!

    3. Where did you find the widget at the bottom of each post: “If you like this post. . . . ”

I hope you don’t mind the questions. Any insight you can provide would be great.

    • Hi Michele, Thanks for your nice feedback. I’m happy to help another blogger!
      1. Yes, I chose not to use the featured images for a reason. It can be problematic when you move to a new theme, if that theme doesn’t have featured images or if the featured images appear in a different size, and so on. They will duplicate in the post if you Set a Featured Image and Insert a Photo too or if you have Photos inserted from your previous theme. When I moved from Inuit Types to Bueno I also got duplicate images in my previous posts and had to go back and deleted the featured image in each post (or I could have deleted the inserted image, but I chose not to use the Featured Post option for the above reason. Hope that makes sense. This article explains the use of the featured posts in Bueno (different than featured image, but might be helpful) wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/05/13/featured-postsimages-in-bueno/#comment-2555 —-There’s also a recent article on featured posts.
      2. I used the Gravatar widget available in the Widget section. To do that you need to first post a Gravatar image (your photo in this case) in your WordPress Profile. You can learn how to do that at http://www.onecoolbloggingsitetips.com Just use the search box on the site to find the article on Gravatar image or go to WordPress Support and look for the documentation about setting up a Gravatar. it’s easy.
      3. The “Add to Any” button is not a WordPress widget. It’s a button you can get at “Add to Any” – just google that. The site has instructions on how to add the button at the end of your post. It’s easy. You just drag the button from the site into your bookmarks bar and then, more or less, at the end of the post you just click the button in your tool bar and it appears in the post. There’s a little more too it, but there’s instructions at the site or you can go to http://www.onecoolbloggingsitetips.com again and look for the article called Social Bookmarks (I think).
Also, the WordPress Forum is a great place to ask questions like this. There have been a number of questions about Bueno and there are volunteers that kindly answer questions for us.
BTW, you can easily change the background on Bueno, if you wish. Good luck!

      • Thank you Sandra. I didn’t mean for you to have to write all of this. It is a huge help, however. I was waiting on a response from the volunteers but no need after hearing from you. Be blessed

  6. I think your page looks great! I just switched to Bueno this morning. I’m still fidgeting with it. I don’t like the gray text I am getting instead of black. But other than that, I am pretty happy with it. Keep up the good work!

    • Hi there, what a wonderful life goal you have! And interesting life too. Your Bueno looks great.

The grey text is the way Bueno is. You can only change it by making a small change in the html code for every post or by highlighting the text and using the color box for text in the visual editor or by purchasing the CSS upgrade from WordPress.com. Changing the html code is the “correct” way of the first two options. I have the CSS upgrade so I’ve change the default option for body text to black permanently.

Wishing you a wonderful time in Turkey.

  7. You know?, I’m starting to try out making my own blog. Manifest was the first one that I felt touched by. I don’t know yet how to use it as well as you, but let me tell you you make it awesome. I also like your topics, so I’ll be exploring your entries around in the next days.

    Best wishes.

    • Hello Jorge,

Your blog looks great! I have a custom design upgrade from wordpress.com so I’ve been able to make changes that you won’t be able to make without the upgrade. For example, I made the width of the writing area wider. It’s a beautiful and simple theme though, so even without the custom upgrade it looks very nice. Thanks for your interest in my blog. Explore to your heart’s content. I wish you the best with your blog. Warmest wishes.
